When IVF Takes Over Your Life
Seven small ways to feel more like yourself again—without pretending the uncertainty isn't real.
1. Give yourself permission to stop counting for a moment.
Numbers matter in treatment. They don't have to be the only thing you think about. Consider choosing one time of day to check updates or research, then deliberately step away.
2. Make room for two feelings at once.
You can be happy for a pregnant friend and heartbroken for yourself. Neither feeling cancels the other.
3. Decide what you will—and won't—discuss.
Try: “I appreciate you checking in. I’m not ready to talk about treatment today, but I’ll let you know when I am.”
4. Reclaim one small ritual with your partner or yourself.
A walk, a meal without treatment talk, or a favorite show can help life feel a little less consumed by appointments.
5. Plan for the waiting periods.
Before the next call or test, write down who you want nearby, what helps you settle, and what you might need afterward.
6. Notice when your mind turns uncertainty into blame.
“I should have started sooner” may feel like an explanation, but it isn't a verdict on your worth. Try asking what you need right now instead.
7. Let support be part of your plan.
Talking with a therapist or trusted person doesn't mean you're giving up. It means you don't have to carry every part of this alone.
A note from Julie
There is no perfect way to navigate infertility. You deserve space for your real feelings and practical support for the days that feel especially hard.
